The year-old carried out the violent attack on the year-old in his kitchen and caused multiple stab wounds and "slash" injuries to his head and left a knife embedded in his skull. Mr Black had been struck with such force, the knife had gone through his skull and into his brain, and had to be forcibly removed by a pathologist.
Mr Black sustained extensive injuries to his torso, with his heart and liver both being pierced and sustained 64 "sharp force injuries" in the attack which targeted his "head and neck". Costello faced a trial at Teesside Crown Court and admitted the killing but claimed it was manslaughter rather than murder on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
